Top dog names

Did you see what we did there? This is a big list of names for your dog.

A random name from our list of dogs' names:

Top things to think about when choosing your dog's name

Choosing a name for your dog is an important decision. It can be a chance to choose a name that is unique and witty, or wholesome, meaningful, or just cute. But you don’t want to choose a name for your dog that you’ll later regret. After all, you’ll be calling your dog by that name every day for years and years.

Skip this to see the full list of dog names ⮧

Here are a few do's and don'ts:

Try your idea for a dog's name out loud

The first thing is to try saying that name out loud.

And yes, try calling out the name in different ways. How would you call your dog over if they’d run off? How would you say their name if they were being naughty? Imagine yourself running through the park trying to get your dog’s attention. How do you feel about that name now?

Think of long-term names

Choose a name that will suit your dog throughout their whole life. Don’t go for a name that will suit a fluffy little new born puppy but that would seem out of place as your dog matures.

Keep the name short

Dogs' names that are just two syllables are usually best. If you choose anything longer, you will probably just end up shortening it anyway.

Are you really going to shout out “Editor of the Huffington Post” in the dog park, or event “Sir Barks-a-lot”?

Avoid confusing your dog with names that sound like commands

You wouldn’t name your dog “Walkies” would you? That would just be confusing for the poor dog. Or perhaps you would. You're like that, aren't you!

But also try not to confuse your dog by using names that might sound similar to commands. What phrases are you going to be using? Presumably “Stay”, “Sit”, “No”, and probably “Fetch” and a few others. So try to avoid naming your dog anything that sounds like these.

Keep that name PG!

Avoid rude words or innuendos. As hilarious as they might be—and we all love a good double meaning—at some point you’re going to have to call for your dog in front of small children. Even if the frowns from the other moms don’t bother you, don’t make your dog’s name the reason why you have to explain ***** to a small child!
